DSL: Delayed for Rural America

This is a message for Pasty.NET members and prospective members, who have registered for DSL in response to promises verbalized in the 2006 merger of two telecom giants. (see FCC Docket No. 06-74, see comments on page 5).

The commitments made during that merger gave hope to thousands of phone customers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula who live beyond the reach of existing broadband infrastructure.  By the time the target date was reached - the end of 2007 - hundreds of new DSL users had in fact been added to the grid... but thousands remained beyond its reach here in the U.P.

In the FCC documents sited above, Commissioner Michael J. Copps states: "The new company will need to come back to the FCC at the end of next year (2007) to tell us whether it has met its responsibility. I, for one, will be watching closely to ensure that it does."

Join Pasty.NET in reporting to the FCC that thousands of phone customers in our area are still without broadband Internet access.  For all who have submitted a pre-registration and deposit with Pasty.NET, your name will be included in our report to the FCC.  If you have not submitted the form, you are welcome to do so early in 2008, to be included along with the others.  Alternatively, you could report directly to the FCC that DSL did not reach your location by the end of 2007, in writing to:

Federal Communications Commission

Since 2001 Pasty.NET has made progress in bringing broadband Internet service to underserved communities and rural users in the 906 area code.  We will continue in this mission during 2008, adding new wireless access points as well as connecting our members to DSL wherever it becomes available.

Pasty.NET can submit "Manual Loop Requests" (MLRs) for DSL service anywhere in the 906 area code.  These requests inform the engineering department at the phone company of the areas with greatest immediate demand.  When available, the service will cost as low as $19.95/month. You will have a variety of DSL routers available, ranging from $49-$89.  There is a $50 refundable deposit required to submit your manual loop request.  See Q&A about the MLR and deposit
